How it works
Easy-access savings separate money from day-to-day spending while paying interest where offered. The interest rate is commonly variable. Access may be by transfer to a nominated account rather than a debit card. An account described as easy access may still limit withdrawals, take time to transfer funds or reduce interest after a withdrawal. Introductory bonuses can expire.
What if you have bad credit?
A deposit-only savings account is not ordinarily an application to borrow money, but identity and eligibility checks still apply. Poor credit does not automatically mean you cannot save. A provider may require an existing linked account, local residency or a minimum deposit. Holding savings alone does not guarantee an improvement in a credit score.
What to look for before applying
- Variable rate, bonus expiry and any balance tiers
- Withdrawal limits and transfer timing
- Minimum balance and linked-account requirements
- Fees, taxes and the applicable deposit protection
A simple example
If 1,000 earns 3% for one full year with no changes or compounding, gross interest is 30. A withdrawal condition or expiring bonus can change the actual return. This is an illustration, not an advertised rate.
Examples use made-up figures to explain the feature. They are not offers, quotes or personalised advice.
Who holds the money, and what protects it?
Check the legal institution holding your money, not just the app or brand name. A qualifying deposit at a covered bank or credit union may have deposit protection, subject to the scheme’s limits, eligibility and aggregation rules. Different brands can share one banking licence. E-money safeguarding and a bank-deposit guarantee are not the same thing.
No protection amount applies everywhere. Check your local scheme, whether this account and currency qualify, how balances with the same institution are combined and whether joint or business ownership changes the calculation. Protection against an institution failing is also different from rights concerning scams or unauthorised payments.
How the rules vary by country
Interest disclosure and tax treatment differ. Savings held through an app may be deposited at another institution; confirm where funds are legally held and whose scheme applies.
